Shared cruise or private charter?
How to choose, by group size and occasion.
A shared cruise is the right choice for one to four people who want to see the skyline from the water without spending a fortune. Boats are 80 to 120 ft, carry 40 to 80 guests, and follow a fixed two-hour route: out of the Marina, along JBR, around the Palm crescent with Atlantis, past Burj Al Arab and back. Sunset departures are the most popular; brunch and evening dinner cruises exist too. Expect a mixed crowd, background music and a buffet or canapés.
A private charter makes sense from about six people, or for any occasion where you want the boat to yourselves: a proposal, a birthday, a team outing. You pay per hour for the whole boat, choose the route within the permitted zones, stop to swim, and bring your own catering or order it through the operator. Two hours is the minimum on most boats; three to four hours is the sweet spot for a swim stop.
Fishing charters are a separate thing: smaller sport-fishing boats, four-hour morning trips, tackle included, and the captain keeps you where the fish are rather than where the skyline is.
